Frequently Asked Questions
Soak in Epsom salt bath to continue relaxing your body and increasing circulation.
Listen to your body; if you feel tired, lay down and rest. If you feel energized, do something active you love doing.
Communication of any schedule changes should treated with urgency and consideration. Be considerate if you can’t make your scheduled appointment. Please do not “no call, no show” your therapist. Most therapists are trained in business courses to charge clients for such instances. No-shows equate to no income for a massage therapist, which hurts business tremendously. Please contact your massage therapist as soon as you know you will not be able to attend an established appointment time. Remember that the therapist will likely have a cancellation policy to honor.
Consider eating light before your massage and if possible, avoid intake of caffeine until after your session: Since massage will encourage blood flow throughout the body at large, pushing it away from the core will disrupt digestion. Please plan ahead and avoid eating a normal-sized meal within an hour of your appointment.
Drink extra water. You want to flush out your body. Massage releases toxins like lactic acid from your muscles, and if you do not drink additional water, you may feel a headache. Avoid drinks with high sugar or caffeine content, as these drinks prove harmful and dehydrating in the long run.
Communication regarding any injuries relevant to the session ahead of time. Be open about conditions, injuries, and state of health. Massage therapists need to know the health changes clients possess. Massage therapy directly impacts all body systems, including circulatory, nervous, digestive, and muscular. A therapist needs to know the overall state of health to be aware of contraindications and modifications to bodywork.
Remain active. Staying mobile encourages continuous blood circulation, thereby feeding tissues at a healthy rate.
Please tell your practitioner if you are sensitive to fragrances. This way, the massage therapist can use appropriate body products for you and be mindful of fragrance-free products they use throughout the day before your session, as well.
Hygiene matters with any health care treatment, especially involving skin-to-skin contact. Ensure proper hygiene by showering before the session. Plan accordingly, especially if outdoor activity, exercise, or heavy labor is planned for the day. A massage therapist uses professional-grade products that will be negated by filth upon the body. Clean skin can easily absorb the medicinal components of massage products, including essential oils with medicinal qualities.
Track how you feel the day after, two days following, and the 3rd-day post session.
As body awareness heightens, one will realize the effects of massage, physical changes, and in general what activities alleviate your pain and restrictions. A therapist needs to know how the physical body is responding to massage efforts, as every person may experience different results from touch.
Being punctual. Show up 5-10 minutes early, and make sure you are at your location when the massage therapist arrives if you are receiving mobile, in-home massage. Arriving shortly before the appointment time ensures a client will receive the full allocated time for treatment. Consider the setup time that each instance of removing clothing to get up on the table and putting clothing upon session end, along with any necessary conversation between therapist and client, will take between 1-2 minutes per instance. Remember that most therapists need to stick to their established times, as clients are booked consecutively throughout the day. Therapists try to avoid large gaps between sessions. If you have any deadlines or dinner reservations, make sure the massage therapist knows the time frame you need to finish by, as well.
Be aware of mental and emotional changes. Massage efforts also impact the mental and emotional aspects of self-care. A client may recognize greater clarity and productivity. Be aware you may be sensitive and your emotions may be more on the surface. Ask yourself if anything deeper is the cause of your emotions that come up.
